Yvette McElroy Anderson is my aunt, mentor, accountability partner and motivator. She was born in the city of Detroit on March 27, 1957. She wears many hats including the Field Director of the Fannie Lou Hamer Political Action Committee. Before I was eligible to vote, she encouraged me to get involved with the political action committee to gain firsthand experience of the importance of civic engagement as a young person. I remember my first time working as a poll worker in the city of Detroit on election day. I was responsible for passing out slates the endorsed candidates slate to voters to encourage them to vote for candidates passionate about creating change through policies in their community in the spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer.

Yvette McElroy Anderson also serves as the Executive Director of the Intojane Training Institute. The institute is a rite of passage program that provides training to young women between the ages of 6-18 years old. I am a product of the program which provided me with various tools like the power of mentorship, the importance of knowing my rights and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

I am grateful for my aunt’s presence in my life because she always pushed me to be excellent and to always continue to educate myself. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Wayne State University in their Educational Leadership and Policy Studies program. Yvette McElroy Andeson is revolutionary because she enlists others to be the change they want to see in their communities.
