On November 6th, 2018 Representative Alma S. Adams was elected to the 12th Congressional District of North Carolina. Representative Adams serves on numerous committees including the Committee on Agriculture, Committee on Education, and Committee on Financial Services to name a few.

Representative Adams is revolutionary because she is the co-founder of the Black Maternal Health Caucus with Rep. Lauren Underwood. The purpose of the caucus is to improve Black maternal health outcomes.

“Racial disparities in maternal health have not improved in three decades. Regardless of educational attainment and income, Black women and their children are at risk..“As a Black mother and grandmother, I’m proud to launch the Black Maternal Health Caucus to ensure that Black women and infants have the rights, respect and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy.”.” said Founder and Black Maternal Health Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Adams

In the U.S. the mortality rate for Black women is 40 deaths per 100,000 live births. Black women are four times more likely than white women and twice more likely than other races to die from preventable pregnancy complications.

We need Black women to cultivate the lives of Black girls to create their own equitable society. Our Black mothers must be seen and heard by their doctors, caregivers, family, and friends during their pregnancy.

I commend Representative Alma Adams for her work as an advocate for Black Women to increase their likelihood to survive pregnancy. Thank you Representative Adams for your work to help improve Black Maternal health outcomes.
