Day 16 - Maya Angelou

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was the first book that I read from Maya Angelou. I knew that Maya Angelou was a well-known author, especially in the Black Community. As soon as I began reading the book, I could not put it down. Ms. Angelou eloquently told the story of her childhood. Including all of the graphic details, the highs and the lows, and how she made a life for herself through letting go of the past.

Maya is revolutionary because she was able to share her experience with abuse and her personal battles. She was relatable and provided wisdom to Black girls everywhere that have experienced abuse and other common shared experiences. I admire Maya Angelou because of her poetic ability. She used poetry as an outlet to tell her story and empower others.

Ms. Angelou is famous for her poems “Phenomenal Women, And Still I Rise”. I recall reciting “ And Still I Rise” during watch night service at my church in Detroit, MI. During my recitation, I felt empowered as I continued to say my rendition of the poem. Maya Angelou’s poems are like affirmations. I encourage you to continue to write your own story. Rise above the negativity in your life and look on the bright side. This is why Maya Angelou wrote, to help herself and others rise above negative experiences and celebrate life.
